Guidance: Claim a refund of Income Tax deducted from savings and investments

Apply for a repayment of tax on your savings interest using form R40 if you do not complete a Self Assessment tax return.

If you’re registered for Self Assessment, apply for a repayment on your Self Assessment tax return.

If you meet any of the Self Assessment criteria, you must complete a tax return. Do not submit form R40 for repayment.

If you (or the person you’re claiming for) live abroad, apply for a repayment using form R43.

Before you start

The time limit for applying is 4 years after the end of the tax year you are claiming for. You need to submit a separate application for each tax year.

To submit an application on behalf of someone else, you must use the postal form. If you are applying on behalf of a minor, you need to include their residential address on the form.

Read the R40 notes (PDF, 550 KB, 8 pages) to help you fill in the form.
