Details
HMRC is introducing a simple tax check that will take place when people renew the following licences:
- taxi and private hire drivers
- private hire operators
- booking offices
- scrap metal dealer sites
- mobile or itinerant scrap metal collectors
This is a small addition to the requirements licensing authorities already put in place. The straightforward online check should only take a few minutes, typically once every few years.
The tax check is simply to confirm that the applicant is appropriately registered for tax.
The tax check was introduced for licensees in England and Wales from April 2022 and will be introduced for licensees in Scotland and Northern Ireland from April 2023.
We want to make sure licensees:
- understand what the tax check code is
- are registered for tax where needed
How you can help
We have provided these communications resources for stakeholders and partners to use across your own channels to help share important information and helpful messages with licensees. They include:
- sample article/blog post
- tax check factsheet (provided in various languages)
- sample social media messages and visuals
Please share these materials with licensees, including through your social media channels.
The messages can be personalised as needed and should be used in conjunction with dedicated guidance on the tax check and the preparatory guidance for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Tell us what you think
We’d like to find out how useful you find the communications materials provided on this page. We have created a short survey to capture your feedback. We’d be grateful if you could complete it, it should take around 10 minutes.
